Poker Hand Rankings for Newbies

You want to play poker with your friends, but you don’t have any idea which hand is good and wich one is bad ? In this article, I will explain each possible hand. The listing is in order, the first one (Royal flush) in the higher hand.

Royal Flush

A royal flush is the best possible hand in poker. It’s symply an ace-high straight flush.(A-K-Q-J-10) There are only four of them (spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs suits). If you have a Royal Flush hand, you can raise your bet.

Straight flush

A straight flush is five cards of the same suit in sequence, like : K-Q-J-10-9 of spades or 7-8-9-10-J of hearts. It’s a very powerful hand.

Four of a kind

Quads or four of a kind is simply a five card hand composed of four cards of one rank, plus one unrelated card. For example J-J-J-J-5. The higher the rank is, the better is the hand. Example: a quads of king beats fours jacks.

Full House

A full house is three card of one rank plus a pair of another rank. To determine the rank of a full house, you take then tree-card grouping rank, not the pair. For example, 9-9-9-5-5 is called “nines full of fives”.

Flush

A flush is five cards of the same suit. Any cards form the same suit. They don’t have to be in sequence ( a sequence is a straight flush). If the table have more than one flush, the winning hand is determined by the rank order of the highest card or cards in the flush.

Straight

A straight is five sequences cards, but not all of the same suit. If more than one straight is present, the highest card in the sequence is the winner.

Three-of-a-kind

Three cards of the same rank with two unrelated cards. You can also call this hand a trips or a set.

Two Pair

Two cards of one rake with two cards of another rank PLUS one unrelated card. The winning hand is determined by the higher rank. If two or more players hold two pair and each has the same high pair, then the rank of the second pair determined the winner. If two or more players hold the same two pair, then the rank one the unrelated card determine the winner. If two hand is identical, then the players split the pot.

One pair

This hand is simply two cards of one rank and three unrelated cards. If two player have the same pair, the winner is determined by the rank of the unrelated cards.

No pair

This hand consists of five unrelated cards. The rank order of the unrelated card determines the winner.
