How to Play on a Tactical Server
In the PC version of Call of Duty, players can choose what types of servers they want to play on. Frequently private servers have their own rule sets. Some of those rules are naturally enforced by the configuration of the server itself. But other rules are enforced by the community that owns the server, like by player/admins who can boot players that break the rules.
In general, a “Tactical Server” is a server where the rules prohibit running. But often the rules go beyond that. Tactical players are trying to recreate a realistic feel to combat. Run-and-gun servers, with players bunny hopping around, can detract from that tense feeling. Sure, the action is fast, but it is almost silly.
Additionally, the skills involved in winning on a non-tactical server are usually oriented more toward individual performance. Tac servers encourage team communication, since the slower pace can inhibit showboating and keep one player from soaring above the other based solely on his reflexes. That’s the point…tactical means that it requires strategy.
Each individual server will have its own rules, but besides the “no running” rule, you are likely to find other rules such as the prohibition of spawn-camping, or camping in general. Many tactical servers want you to keep moving. They may also prohibit certain unrealistic behavior, such as jumping from second-story windows. And many have restrictions on how you use your weapon, like forbidding the use of pistols outside, outlawing shooting through walls, or requiring you to raise sights when firing to avoid hip-shooting.
The best way to approach any server is to actually read the rules that they display. Many servers will show the rules in a splash screen before the game. Others tend to list the rules through the console chat as the game is played.
If you see the word “Tactical” anywhere in the server name or list of rules, start out by always crouching when you move. Do not run, and do not walk with your sites down. In other words, either crawl, crouch-walk, or walk with sights up. That will take you far into being accepted into the tactical community.
Beyond that, always remember that you can ask for clarification. But be sure that you’ve read all the rules before you ask.
