Hidden Hazards Of Online Gaming

Massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG) such as World of Warcraft, Age of Conan, EVE online, and others are very popular. They can also be quite addictive. You don’t have to look too hard to find stories of people who have forsaken most of what we consider a normal life to spend most of their days in a virtual world.

While it’s not quite the same as a drug addiction it can start in what sometimes seems to be innocent way. Probably the main similarity is that nobody takes a drug the first time with the goal of becoming addicted to it. The same thing is true for online gaming. No one starts playing an online game so that they can become addicted to it.

It’s something that starts gradually and it can happen without you even realizing what’s going on. When you start a new game like this you continue playing because it’s a new experience, it’s an immersive environment, and you’re able to make progress within the game world that gives you feelings of completion that may be missing in real life.

It’s this exhilaration of completing goals and tasks that seems to give online games their addictive nature. Once you get past the initial exhilaration and feelings of success in completion given by things like leveling up your character, completing certain goals requests, or amassing wealth you begin to enter the next phase of online games which is becoming more involved with the online community within that game.

At some point it becomes important to complete different parts of the game or acquire certain items in a game in order to compare your accomplishments with other players. It’s very much a virtual reality in that you are building virtual relationships with real people from around the world. And this is where it becomes dangerous to personal relationships they have locally with your family and friends.

The online on relationships can end up replacing the real physical relationships. They begin to feel closer with their online companions than they do with their companions that may live in the same house with him. And so the hours spent online seem to the people playing the game to be quality interactions.

If someone in your life seems to spend way too many hours with their online community and you want to help them have more interactions with her friends and family, it’s best to gradually go about that. You need to find a way to connect with this person if they are important to you. Find out what it is that the like to do (or used to like to do) and try to do those things with them. It’s going to be difficult to try to get them to go off-line for a while, but the more time that they can spend away from the game, without having it being forbidden, the more they will realize how much they’re missing in real life.
